One-to-one meetings are one of the most powerful tools we have as leaders. They are a perfect way to build trust, coach individuals, grow talent, and drive performance.
Why One-to-Ones Matter
When done consistently and thoughtfully, one-to-ones: • Give people a space to feel heard, supported, and valued. • Help leaders spot opportunities for growth, development, and motivation. • Create a regular opportunity for feedback, recognition, and addressing challenges early. • Strengthen the connection between individual and team success.
Why Team Buy-In Is Critical
One-to-ones only work if both sides are fully invested. If employees see these meetings as a chore, the opportunity is lost.
To get real buy-in: • Explain the purpose clearly: These meetings are for them, not just about them. • Show the value: Explain how it helps them grow, share ideas, and get support. • Be consistent: Rushed or cancelled meetings send the wrong message.
When people feel these sessions are for them, they show up differently — more open, more engaged, more motivated.
One-to-Ones as a Coaching Tool
These meetings aren’t just check-ins — they’re coaching opportunities. Use them to: • Ask open-ended questions about goals and challenges • Give real-time feedback supportively • Help team members reflect and problem-solve • Build accountability while empowering independence
Key Leadership Mindset • Be present – Listen more than you talk • Be curious – Ask more than you tell • Be consistent – Treat this as a priority, not a task
One-to-ones aren’t a “nice to have” — they are essential for building high-performing, motivated teams. When done right, they build trust, performance, and a strong, connected culture.
